While hard to leave Hotel Cigno Mejorada in Merida, it was time to hit the road to explore the town of Izamal. Known as the Yellow City, and about an hour's drive from Merida, Izamal is perfect for a day trip or an overnight. I loved a shop in town called Raíces Mayas where they hand weave light fixtures. They also have a great cafe, and I found a nice artisanal version of the classic Mexican Market Totes, that we sell on Dip A Toe, so we scooped up a bunch of those. We climbed up incredible Mayan ruins that I highly recommend, the site felt incredibly special, and we found ourselves for the night at a hacienda that reminded us that there are highs of travel, and then there are lows, and friends, the hacienda was a low. We lived to tell the tale and are laughing about it now.
